Facing my Arachnid Fears once again and Winter is Coming!

Ok. If you know me, you know that I love bacon and that I am TERRIFIED (TERRIFIED) of arachnids. Remember this from this past summer??

Well, I had to deal with another arachnid this morning.

After coming back from our morning walk, I was giving Abby some neck scratches just outside my front door when I felt my fingers brush against what I thought was a growth. Dachshunds are prone to them so I wasn’t shocked, but was thinking “Ew, on her neck? Where I like to give her scratches? That sucks!”. Once we got inside I sat down on the bathroom floor and pulled her in close to me to take a better look at this new growth.

Yeah. That is not a growth…that is a TICK!!! Ewwwwwwwwww!!!

Count ’em. EIGHT LEGS. Scary. They live to bite and suck blood. Carry diseases. Yup, that’s a scary arachnid.

Abby has never had one before and none of my dogs growing up ever had one…so this was new territory for me. WHAT DO I DO???

Watch 6 videos on tick removal YouTube, obviously!! And voila!

The tick with its nasty biting head was successfully pulled out of Abby and died a slow death in a bath of rubbing alcohol.

Abby was soooo good about the minor surgery I was performing…normally she’s a lunatic, but it’s like she knew she just needed to stay still so I could take care of her. Love that creature so much.

The other morning, I opened my door to retrieve my newspaper only to be COMPLETELY SHOCKED at what had happened overnight.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!! Of course, it’s mostly all melted now but…Abby was THRILLED to have the snow…she’s like a husky – moves full speed and totally playfully on our walks with fresh snow!!

Workouts this week:

MONDAY – ran 5 miles in Zone 1 HR but had to skip strength training because I have pulled something in my mid-back. It’s getting better now, but it was hard to even take a deep breath at the beginning of the week – but running didn’t seem to bother it! Have no idea what I did to my back!!!

TUESDAY – 2 miles warm-up, 4 miles at tempo (Zone 3 HR) – again, felt stronger this week than previous weeks!!

TODAY – because of the arachnid incident, my time was cut short and all I could get in was 4 miles…and I still stayed away from the strength training – back is still not 100%.

Happy Thursday!!

It’s the concern of Lyme Disease from that nasty creature!! Eastern Ontario has low rates of ticks with Lyme Disease (5%) but it’s still a chance…and Lyme Disease is awful. I can have her tested in 4-6 weeks which would allow me to put her on treatment before the disease fully takes hold!

      And yes, tarantulas are DISGUSTING.

Wow! Weird time of year for a tick! Miley had one a year or two ago and I found it the same way you found Abby’s. I used to work at the vet clinic we take them to, so her vet / my friend was fine with doing the treatment antibiotics just in case. Good you got all of it out! Yucky, eh?
