What I will and won’t do to get in a run.

What an absolutely fantastic weekend. What did I do that made it so great?

A whole lot of NOTHING.

I typically like to be busy, but I just needed a weekend to just relax – and relax I did!!

This was me Friday night. Feet up and cold beer in the peacefulness of my backyard.

Saturday morning I slept in until 8am!!!! It was heaven!! I had 10 miles on the run plan and I was sure I was going to get soaked as the skies were threatening and this was the weather forecast!

In the end, I think it rained for a total of 5 minutes on Saturday – and not during my run. I did just over 10 miles and my pace was 7:55 and it did not feel good. I just felt like I was dragging and working far too hard for what my pace was. I was pretty frustrated by the last couple of miles and then, like a gift from above, I ran into 3 girls from my team!! I was able to run with them until I reached home which was GREAT!! And while I didn’t feel good on my run, it was a beautiful day!

And here are the third set of locks here in Ottawa – the ones you haven’t yet seen but I know you’ve been dying to see! LOL!

After the crappy run, I decided that I really needed to go buy a new pair of shoes – part of the “dragging” feeling was that it felt as though my shoes weighed a ton. I’ve worn Asics Gel Nimbus for about 8 years and a few times I’ve thought that maybe they were too heavy and attempted to buy a different brand, but each time I just went back to the Nimbus. Saturday, I went out determined to buy something different. I tried on a few – including the newest Nimbus – and I am proud to say:

Bye, bye ugly green beasts…

and hello snazzy looking pair of Mizuno Wave Riders!!

I tested them out on the treadmill Sunday afternoon (in case I hated them and needed to return them)

And I am happy to report that after an easy 5k on the treadmill, I LOVED the shoes!!! I think it’s the beginning of a beautiful relationship!

Today I had to cover for someone at work which meant going into work an hour earlier than I normally do…and would make it so I couldn’t do my workout in the morning, so I planned to do it after work.  But the more I thought about it, the more I was dreading my workout – I HATE having to run after work. I just have no energy/motivation. I decided that I would rather set my alarm for 4:30am and get in my workout before work rather than do it after work.

There are just some things I will and won’t do to get a run in. And getting up at the crack o’ dawn is apparently is one of them.

This is what it was like when I left my house at 5am after having eaten breakfast and fed Abby – pretty, right?

And in case you were wondering, she still does throw-downs at that time. To me they seemed even more ridiculous. “Princess-Abby, no one is out to see you and rub your belly, GET UP!”

And then it was time to pull on the NEW SHOES and head out for some hill sprints! I did a 5k warm-up around my neighbourhood rather than down along the river path…just wasn’t convinced it was the smartest/safest thing to be doing at that hour.  Then it was hill time!

I did 12 x hill sprints (~130m at full speed) with a walk/jog back down the hill.

These were my times when I did the hill sprint workout 2 weeks ago:

30seconds, 29, 29, 27, 29, 28, 26, 26, 26, 26, 25, 25

And today:

27seconds, 26, 26, 25, 25, 25, 25, 24, 25, 24, 24, 23

WHAT??!!! I think that some of it is fitness (thankfully) but I also think some of it has to do with the new shoes – I just felt light and springy in them.

I’m sure I’ll crash by the end of the workday from my early start, but it was SO WORTH IT!!

Happy Monday!!
