Wow – what I crazy busy weekend. I’m exhausted – and am VERY happy that today is a rest day. I deserve it.
Saturday I was at a fitness conference all day. As I mentioned in a previous post, I teach group fitness classes. This conference is an annual event and is normally a great place to learn from national and internationally renowned fitness experts – I usually participate in the “doing” workshops where by the end of the day I can barely move. This year’s was ok, but I certainly didn’t come away with as many new tools and ideas as I normally do. And I know that I’m sensitive to this given when I do, but I found that there was too much talk about weight loss and exercise…there are SO MANY better reasons to stay active, why do we have to keep talking about weight loss?? And WHY do we all think we need to lose weight to look like the
fake women in the magazines!
Sunday morning I woke up utterly confused. I could hear a snowplow outside my house, but why? There was no snow in the forecast! So I got up and looked out the window and got the biggest shock. Over 6 inches of snow had fallen overnight!!! The weather guys were shame-faced and said that the winter storm in eastern US states had snuck across the border and hit eastern Ontario!
I walked the dog and that experience (see pic below of poor Abby – the abominable snowdog) was enough for me to know that it was going to be another 10-mile treadmill run. What I would do without Breaking Bad, I don’t know!
In the afternoon I headed over the National Women’s Show that was being held in town over the weekend. I spent my late teenage years and early 20’s as a camper and staff at Camp Ouareau – one of the most defining experiences of my life. In addition to a summer camp, they offer “Women’s Weekends” in September where women (obviously) can go and spend a weekend up at camp (which is GORGEOUS) and participate in a variety of workshops being offered, relax and just have fun…with women. It is an awesome thing to do with a bunch of girlfriends. Anyway, the camp had a booth at this show to advertise it. I had been to this show before and had enjoyed it (LOTS of free samples and neat products), but this year I was disgusted. This show is a perfect time to empower women and make them feel good about themselves. But the message this year was loud and clear. We are not perfect as we are, but here a whole bunch of services that can help you be better: weight loss, anti-aging skincare, cosmetic surgery. I’d say 75% of the booths were this. I was incredibly disappointed.
Anyway, by the time I got into bed last night, every part of my body hurt and was exhausted. Normally rest day is touch – I like to start my day off with a run. But this morning I took the rest day without a second thought or complaint! 🙂
